On November 4th 1979, 52 Americans were ambushed and were held captive for the next 444 days inside of the U.S embassy.
These Americans were held hostage by a group of what some people called extremists. They were and is a group of Islamic students and militants. In the photo to the left we see the comic about the about the hostage crisis. This photo is trying to bring up the idea that the hostage crisis wasn't as effective as they had hoped it to be and there could have been other ways of getting the same effect. Some other manners would have been less life threatening.
In some ways this event could have been what has led most United States citizens to have the single story they do today. Of the violence and the hatred toward Americans. Even on the god they worship and they way they go about with their culture.
Persepolis goes to show a better story and image and a kind of bias towards Iran.
In Persepolis there is a sort of connection between the way these student feel towards Americans, and the way Marji feels toward the government in Tehran. She feels helpless but she still tries to fight against what she has little chance of changing. Marji tries her hardest to make a difference with the government and start a revolution but what is the most she can do as a teenager? So in a way Marji she's the exact opposite of those student because of her love for American culture and government and the American pop-culture but hen she hates her own government like those students who held up those 444 Americans at the embassy. The whole world is different but would it be better if the whole world communicated more?
